Your personal contacts database is designed to support the communication features of Places.com. Places.com users register using their email address. Specifying visibility of check-ins, pictures, email lists, and whom you are with when checked-in, are all simplified to one or two taps, when people you communicate with are in your Contacts.
The illustration below depicts how your contacts are used to specify 3 important lists you use when using Places.com.

My List is used to specify recipients of a group email, or people you designated can view a picture when you upload a picture.
Check-In Audience is used to specify who can you if you are checked in. Your check-in settings also must be set so your check-ins are visible to your check-in audience.
The Here With set is used only when you are checked-in to tag whom you are with. Contacts tagged to a check-in appear are included in the check-in.
Adding contacts to your personal database and specifying the lists they belong to is managed from the Contacts screen.

Entering Your First Contact
Contacts are entered from the Contacts screen. This section describes the process of adding new contacts.
![]() |
To enter your first contact, 1. Tap the Contacts button at the bottom to display the Contacts screen. Before entering any contacts, your screen should appear similar to the image on the left. |
![]() |
2. Tap the button to add your first contact, 3. Enter a name for the contact (optional), 4. Enter an email address (required), 5. Enter a phone number (optional), 6. Enter a group name (optional), 7. Tap Save Contact. |
The Email Address is required because it is used to identify other registered users. If this contact is also a registered user, you will have access to information that the contact chooses to make available to you, such as telephone number, personal photo, gender, relationship status and political preference.
If the Name field is left blank, the contact will be referred to by email address.
If the contact makes his or her telephone number available, and you have a better telephone number for the person, then enter that phone number in the Phone field and check the Precedent checkbox, and this number will be used for the Call button instead. A phone number provided by the contact will have a blue Call button and a number provided by you will have a green Call button.
You can group your contacts by entering the name of a group in the Group field. Entering a new group name will cause a new button with that name to appear in the top gray set of buttons of the Contacts screen. Tapping that button will list just the contacts in that group.
The My List and Check-In Audience checkboxes will place the contact in these special groups upon entry. They will likely change often and it is easier to set these from the Contacts screen, which is discussed below.

Contacts Screen
Once you enter a contact, it will appear on the Contacts screen. From the Contacts screen you are able to list all your contacts, display groups and subset lists of contacts, send emails, make calls and modify the special lists that make the app easier to use.
![]() |
The example Contacts screen on the left indicates 8 contacts total. Tapping a gray button at the top will display that set. Each display button also indicates how many are in the set. |
![]() |
Tapping the All Contacts button at the top left displays all the contacts. Tapping it a second time will close the list. For each contact, the first name you see is the Name field used when adding the contact. Tapping a contact’s name displays the full contact record for that person. A photo and a name in brackets indicates this contact is a registered Places.com user and the name in brackets is the user’s Screen name. Note that the example reflects the diagram at the top of the page. Of the 8 contacts, two are in My List and three are in the Check-In Audience. |
Just Phones Filter Button
The Just Phones button is a toggle filter that removes contacts from the display with no phone numbers. Tapping the Just Phones button again will return the display to how it was before the first tap.
Just Phones only works when contacts are listed. If no contacts are being displayed, the Just Phones button is non-functional.

Just Phones is a filter that removes contacts without phone numbers from the contacts display list. The example on the left shows the Just Phones button tapped with all contacts being listed. All 5 contacts with phone numbers are displayed. Tapping the Just Phones button again will return the screen to displaying All Contacts. |

Check-In Audience
The Check-In Audience defines a set of contacts that you can allow to see when you are checked in. To allow your check-in audience to see you when you are checked in, the visibility setting of your check-in must also be set to Check-In Audience.
Note that if you are checked in and your check-in visibility is set to Check-In Audience, and you change your Check-In Audience, the changes will update immediately. For example, if you are checked in and visible to your Check-In Audience, then adding a contact to your Check-In Audience will immediately allow that contact to see that you are checked in.

Checked-In Here With
When you are checked in someplace, you can mark whom in your contacts you happen to be with. Two more buttons appear on the Contacts screen for viewing and setting whom you are with. A Here With button will appear between the My List and Check-In Audience buttons. (The Check-In Audience button is renamed just Audience.) Also, a Set With button appears between the Set My List and Set Audience buttons. These buttons are used to add to the historical account the contacts that were along with you at a particular time and place.
Later, when viewing past check-ins for the place, you will see these contacts listed at the end of the check-in. View past check-ins of a place by tapping the place name on the Map screen.
Also, the check-in information is accessible from the contact record. To view past check-ins with a contact, tap the contact’s name on the contact record screen.

Contact Record Fields
The Contact Record for a contact is displayed when tapping the contact on the Contacts screen.
The contact record displays information you have entered about the contact. If the contact is also a registered Places.com user, the contact record will also show information that the contact has chosen to make available to you.
From the Contact Record you can also email or call the contact, see or add notes on the contact, or update the contact record.
(Note, in the examples that follow, Gavin’s contact record has been updated from the previous examples.)

Tapping the contact’s Name or Email Address opens the notes below your portion of the contact record. This example shows the user checked-in 3 times with Gavin. The Edit Notes button allows hiding and deleting of notes. Add a new note by tapping the Add Note button. Tap the contact name or email address again to close the notes section. |
Email Contact
Sending an email to the contact is similar to sending to My List. You can open your email app with a blank email or with a Places.com link to your current location. The To: field of the email will be populated with the email addresses of the contact.
![]() |

Update Contact
The form for updating a contact is similar to the form for adding a contact except a Delete Contact appears below the Save Changes button.
![]() |
In this example, the Phone entry results in the green Call button on the Contact Record. A group name has been added. The contact has been added to My List and the Check-In Audience. To delete the contact, 1. check the Delete contact checkbox, 2. Tap the Save Changes button, 3. Tap OK when the dialog box appears to confirm the deletion. |
The Email Address is required because it is used to identify other registered users.
If the Name field is left blank, the contact will be referred to by email address.
If the contact makes his or her telephone number available, and you have a better telephone number for the person, then check the Precedent checkbox, and your number will be used for the Call button instead. A phone number provided by the contact will have a blue Call button and a number provided by you will have a green Call button.
You can group your contacts by entering the name of a group in the Group field. Entering a group name will add that contact to the group.
Contact Groups
When contacts have been placed in Groups the group names appear as buttons on the Contacts screen. Tapping the group button will display only those contacts in that group. If there are contacts in one or more groups, and contacts in not group, a button appears on the Contact screen to select ungrouped contacts.
![]() |
In this example, the 4th contact Gavin was placed in a group named Cat (see above). A button for the group named Cat now appears below the My List button on the Contacts screen. Since there is at least one contact group as well as contacts not in any group, a — — button also is added to the Contacts screen. Tapping the Cat button will display only those contacts in the Cat group. Tapping the — — button will display all ungrouped contacts. |
