Check-Ins

Checking in logs the fact that you were at a place at a particular time. You can add private notes to your check-in, mark who you were with, how long you were there, and if you choose to do so, you can let others see where you are at the time you are checked in.

To check in, the Location Services on your device must be turned on, you must be logged in, and the Check In or Re Check In button must be present at the bottom of the screen.

The Check In button will appear at the bottom center of the screen if you are logged in and the Location Services on your device are enabled.

If instead the Geo On button is present, the service is currently not active on your device.

First, make sure your device is geo-location capable and Location Services are enabled.

Next, you can try three ways to restart the geo-location function.

  • Tap the Geo On button at the bottom of the screen and wait a few seconds,
  • Tap the Places.com screen reset button at the top center of the screen and wait a few seconds,
  • Tap the button at the top left corner of the screen to reload the app and your data from the server, resetting the program.

When the geo-location service becomes active, the Check In button should appear.

You can confirm Location Services on your device are working by launching and finding your current location using the Google Maps app. If this is successful, tapping the button should activate the geo-location function for Places.com and the Check In button will appear.

Example Check-In

Checking in is really fast and logs where you were at the time.

To check in,

1. Tap the Check In button at the bottom center of the screen.

A location search will result in a list of nearby place choices.

Google places are indicated with a icon.

Places in your personal database are indicated with the icon.
First we will assume the place is listed:

2. Tap the place to select the place you are checking in to. The selection should turn a light shade of green.

3. Tap the Submit Check-In button below the list of choices.

4. A confirmation dialog box with a summary of the check-in settings will appear. Tap OK to confirm.
Once the check-in has been submitted, the visible message and anticipated check-out time is displayed from the server at the top below the Places.com button. It may take up to a minute for this message to appear after checking in.

On the Places screen, the place listing that you’re checked into will turn a light shade of pink with an asterisk in the very left column.

To enter the name of a new place,

1. Tap the Enter a new name icon.

A text box will appear and the row will turn a light shade of pink.

2. Type in the name of the place,

You can add other information to your check-in by tapping the buttons, or you can use the default settings. You can change the settings after you have checked in. Settings are discussed in more detail below.

3. Tap the Submit Check-In button at the bottom.

Google Places Check-In

If you are sure the place is in Google Places and it’s just not displaying in the list of choices, you can adjust the Google search parameters to better define the type of place you are checking into.

The reason your place doesn’t appear in the list could be because:

  1. There were more possible places than the maximum number of places Google returns in a set of results, which is usually around 20, so Google ranked them, and the place you are at didn’t rank in the top 20, so it didn’t appear in the list of choices, or:
  2. Your search parameters were instead set too narrow, and need to be broadened.
To adjust the Google search parameters,

1. Tap the Search button at the top of the Check-In form.

A form for specifying places will appear above the list of choices.

To specifically narrow a search, you can:

1. Specify part of the name of the place in the Name text box.

This is obvious if you are looking for a well known place with an unambiguous spelling, like “Safeway,” however, if you can’t find “Macy’s” then you might try “Macys” or “Macy”.

Search Google Places – Establishments
The Establishments place type is the most general and recommend as a default. It includes all places of all types, as well as landmarks and street intersections.

To narrow or widen the number of possible places from a Google place search, you can:

1. Specify a smaller or larger location radius,

If you are at the place, you can specify a very narrow radius, like 50 meters, to reduce the candidate places that Google would choose from to return.

However, if the place covers a large area, then a narrow radius may end up excluding the place from a search of the database geo-coordinates of the place happen to be farther away.

2. Specify a narrower or broader place type,

For example, if you are at a restaurant, you can set the place type to Restaurant. For a broader search, set the place type to Establishment.

The place listing example on the left is at the same location and radius as the previous example that consisted of a single restaurant. The only difference is the place type was changed from Restaurant to Establishment.

Re-Checking In

Re-checking in is the same as checking out and then checking back in again except the program remembers what your original check-out time was and defaults it to the same time.

Re-checking in is useful for adding a private message, changing your visible check-in message or your check-out time.

If you need to change your visibility parameters you do not need to re-check in. You can update your check-in visibility parameters anytime on the Check-In and Visibility Settings screen and your changes will take effect immediately.

To re-check in,

1. Tap the Re Check In button at the bottom,
The check-in form will appear,

2. To update any field, tap the corresponding button and the update form for that field will display next to the button,

3. When you are through making your updates, tap either of the Submit Check-In buttons.

The check-in fields are discussed in greater detail next.

Check-In Fields

When checking in, you can specify a private note, change the check-in visibility setting, adjust the check-in and anticipated check-out times, and post a visible message that will display if your check-in is visible to anyone.

Checking-in involves specifying up to 7 parameters upon submission.

Check-In Parameters:

1. A Places.com place is either (a) selected from your personal places database, (2) created as a result of only a Google Place being selected, or (3) added by typing in the name,

2. A Google Place (optional) is selected from the list of choices with the Google Places icon,

3. A Private Note (optional) visible only to you,

4. A Check-in Visibility Setting specifying who can see the Check-In,

5. The Check-In Time for the record,

6. An anticipated Check-Out Time, after which the fact that you were checked in is available only to you,

7. A Visible Message (optional) which can be seen by others as specified by the visibility setting.

Before any check-in submission, a confirmation dialog box is displayed that contains each of the 7 check-in parameters. If you are new to checking in, look over these parameters carefully before tapping the OK button to confirm your submission.
